Ronaldo, voluit Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima, (geboren 22 september 1976, Itaguai, Brazilië), Braziliaanse voetballer die Brazilië in 2002 naar een Wereldbeker-titel leidde en die drie Player of the Year-awards ontving (1996– 97 en 2002) van de Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Ronaldo groeide op in de arme buitenwijk Bento Ribeiro in Rio de Janeiro. Hij begon voetbal te spelen als junior voor de buurt Social Ramos Club op 12-jarige leeftijd en twee jaar later trad hij toe tot São Cristóvão in de Carioca League. In 1992 speelde hij in het Braziliaanse kampioenschap voor Cruzeiro. Hij was lid van het Zuid-Amerikaanse kampioensteam onder de 17 jaar in Brazilië voordat hij in 1994 bij de nationale ploeg kwam.

Ronaldo werd in 1994 overgeplaatst van Cruzeiro naar PSV Eindhoven, waar hij 55 goals scoorde in 56 wedstrijden en het landskampioenschap van 1995 en de Nederlandse beker van 1996 won. Nadat hij voor het seizoen 1996-1997 was overgestapt naar FC Barcelona van Spanje, scoorde hij 34 doelpunten in 37 wedstrijden en hielp hij zijn team de Spaanse Supercup te veroveren. Vanwege zijn succes ontving Ronaldo $ 27 miljoen van Inter Milan om in 1997 voor de Italiaanse club te spelen, een record in die tijd. Bij Inter leverde zijn uitstekende dribbelvaardigheid en talent voor het maken van doelpunten hem de bijnaam "Il Fenomeno" op. In 1997 werd Ronaldo de eerste speler die twee jaar op rij de FIFA Speler van het Jaar-prijs won. In 1999 liep hij echter een ernstige knieblessure op waardoor hij bijna twee jaar niet kon spelen.

Dismissing concerns that his career was over, Ronaldo returned to competitive play in 2001. At the 2002 World Cup he scored eight goals to earn the Golden Shoe award as the tournament’s top scorer and helped Brazil win its fifth World Cup championship. He then announced that he was leaving Inter for Real Madrid of Spain. After much wrangling, Real agreed to pay a transfer fee of about $46.3 million. In 2002 Ronaldo was named both FIFA Player of the Year and European Footballer of the Year (an award he also had received in 1997). At the 2006 World Cup he scored three goals to bring his career total at the tournament to a record-setting 15 (a mark that was broken in 2014 by Germany’s Miroslav Klose).

While playing for the Italian powerhouse AC Milan in 2008, Ronaldo ruptured a tendon in his left knee—the same type of injury that had occurred in his right knee in 1999—which some thought would put his career in jeopardy. In December 2008 a fully recovered Ronaldo signed with the Corinthians in São Paulo. However, he continued to be plagued by a number of other, less significant, leg injuries during his tenure with the Corinthians as well as by a thyroid condition that made him gain weight, and he abruptly retired from the sport in February 2011.

In 2018 Ronaldo became the majority owner of the Spanish club Real Valladolid.
